Stumbled into this little compilation of “Best One-Hit Songs of the 2000s“, and I’m happy to say I’d only ever heard two of them: Are You Gonna Be My Girl by Jet (can’t help thinking that Prince would have murdered this one), and Wherever You Will Go by The Calling.
Now when I say I “heard” them, it’s not that I ever listened to either of them all the way through — no, it’s just that a few momentary notes happened to stick in my brain when the songs played in some store or other, or blasting out of some weenie’s souped-up Honda Civic at the traffic light.
Small wonder that all the above are one-hit wonders. Completely unmemorable at best; totally shit otherwise.
And now we return you to our regular programming.
I remember “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” on the old Apple iPod advertisements. (way back when they advertised iPods)
“Wherever You Will Go” I’ve heard on SiriusXM
That said if you played me either song, I’d be clueless to name either one or who sang them. I guess my head is filled with to many one-hit wonders from the 1980s.
I’ve heard about half of them, the entire roster is utterly forgettable. That said, here’s an amusing cover of one of them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2kOj-GFN8k
“Putting on the Ritz” by Taco. THAT cover holds up pretty well over the last 35 years, but I bought the LP album out of a dollar bin ten years later just as CD’s overran the market, and paid too much at $1.00. They never did anything else as good.
