Smoke And Fire

One of the worst decisions ever made — by a whole bunch of people, not just one — was to allow Chinese scientists to come to the United States and study in our peerless university research facilities.  No doubt this was done for all sorts of noble reasons, such  as spreading scientific discoveries around the world for the betterment of all, etc.

However:

Former GlaxoSmithKline Scientist Pleads Guilty to Stealing Trade Secrets for Chinese Pharma

Chinese Man Pleads Guilty To Stealing Trade Secrets From St. Louis-Based Company To Benefit The Chinese Government

That’s just in last week’s news.  There have been many, many more such incidents, and they were all completely preventable.

What bothers me is that there has been no concerted effort to stop this theft / espionage, by deporting all Chinese-born scientists out of our universities and research institutions.

That inactivity can be laid at the feet of our government.

….the largest criminal enterprise that has ever inhabited the planet.”

  2. As it happens, Chinese and other foreign nationals dominate our graduate STEM programs, because Americans don’t enroll. Even when I was an undergraduate in the 60’s, a large part of the engineering faculty was foreign born and educated. The inherent anti-intellectualism of American culture produced young people with no interest in anything other than narrow trade training. It’s still that way. Just try to convince a talented BS engineering student that he needs an MS or, God-forbid, a PhD.

  3. When these Chinese “Students” attend our Major Universities such as the ones here in Boston they are generally paying full price. Almost none of the US students are paying those rates. If you can get into MIT or The RED school by the river, you can get some sort of scholarship. No one graduates from MIT with large student loans. Where the funding for these Foreign Students ( China is not the only Government doing this ) comes from is not the concern of the school admin.

No one should be surprised when some of these mysterious funding sources want their money back. The universities need these cash cows and the US Government is conveniently looking the other way.

  4. It’s not only the universities and research institutions, of course. Software organizations, energy companies, and anything that is technology based has been thoroughly penetrated and strip-mined for their IP by Chinese employees that are working primarily for the CCP and only secondarily for their nominal employers here. Often these folks are good workers and make significant contributions … they are not just wreckers. At the same time, you can count on anything of value being stolen. I watched this in the oil exploration software sector for years and, when you mention it to anyone whom you might expect to care, they just look at you like you’re the crazy one.

  5. Heh – want another?
Turning our IT (data processing for us old tymers) and support over to the third world.
Especially to countries where bribes are de rigueur.
Over time we’ve offshored to almost every country I could think of off the top of my head where bribery was the norm.

Not to say “Americans” can’t be bought, but, at least when I was growing up, it was recognized as a crime, not a feature of our “enriched” society.

    1. you’re absolutely right.

the problem I have with sending data off shore is that of security. Take HIPPAA for example. or however it is spelled. Will some nobody in a foreign land really be prosecuted for HIPPA violations or selling the database to some other company? I doubt it.

  6. Over this side of the pond, the majority of Chinese students, whilst paying full whack – something between £19500 and £23500, sans accommodation etc, per year, many don’t actually turn up for classes. They want the prestige of a UK university eduction on their CV, but the lecturers and support staff, have the devils own job of getting them to attend, and to submit work. I’m told 2/3rds don’t graduate, not having completed the course, and/or take several goes to do so.

  7. I’m not surprised at all by the Chinese and Indian (DnF) industrial espionage at companies and at universities. Look at that lunkhead at Harvard that got caught lying to the FBI about helping to set up the Wuhan lab that created COVID. Every few years we hear of more and more of these industrial spies. Hang them then send the body back to the ChiComs in pieces
