As Regular Readers know full well, my website has been ill-treating comments (or attempts at commenting) like lions having a buffalo breakfast:
Net result is that nobody, least of all me, is happy about this.
So here’s what’s going to happen.
Over the next couple or so weeks, Tech Support II is going to rebuild this website and its functions on one of his own NSA-capacity servers. This will take place when he’s not fighting the forces of evil and ineptitude (i.e. his regular paying job) and can devote some of his valuable free time to the rebuild. When the time comes, we’ll all get a couple days’ warning, and then he’s going to flip a switch and migrate this whole back porch over to its new digs.
Some content — mostly, it should be said, all the comment-related toxicity — may disappear into the Intarwebz Black Hole never to be seen again. which means that there is a possibility that y’all may have to re-register, or maybe not, we’ll see.
Then all will be well: unicorns running wild in the streets, winning lottery tickets for everybody and a massive, collective and fatal heart attack will strike dead all governmental swamp denizens. (Hey, we can all dream, right?)
Either TSII or I will keep everybody posted as to progress as, if and when it occurs.
Thatisall.
Update from TSII: No need to re-register for the folks. The worst case is a couple of hours of comments getting lost in the move.
Was it something I said?
.
I always thought that the comments section’s irascibility and general grouchiness was a crude, first-generation A.I. reflection of its owner.
I’ll just see myself out…
sterkte!
I’ve been able to post comments, but every time I do so, the page grinds away for several minutes, and then crashes with a Cloudflare error code 254, “A timeout has occurred.” I have to reload the page. But when I check, my comment is posted. So it technically works, but not very well. I’m glad Tech Support II is on the case.
Same here – except usually reloading the page goes back to before my comment, and I have to take it on faith that maybe it posted. (I usually spot it in the “Recent Comments” sidebar eventually.)
I have had the same thing happen – wait for the ‘error’ then refresh !
Having had a part of moving LARGE mainframe installations, promises &/or
guarantees about what will / will not work, or survive the move are hard to
come by.
But have no fear, the NSA has backups just in case !!
That last comment DOES NOT go over well in a meeting covering an
upcoming ‘system move’ !! Take my word for it.
Maybe I let the cat outta the bag ?? I don’t know.
Oh, bloody hell! Either we’re too cranky, or not cranky enough. If we end up having to be NICE here it won’t be worth getting out of bed. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that this is just another step down the yellow brick road. Good luck!
An Edit function would certainly help the grammatically challenged amongst us.
Like me.
Yeah me too. I’m typographically challenged.
…just a few comments about the comments…
First, I want you to know that whatever is going on about your comments section, it’s only a few annoyances, nothing that would drive me away from the blog.
Like others, I can post a comment, but it will error out. Then when I refresh the page, the comment is there.
Another thing – which is a petty annoyance – is that in order for me to read the comments, I first have to scroll back to the top of the post, click on the title, and then scroll back down to the bottom. It would be nice to have a link to the comments at the bottom of the post.
An edit function would be nice, but not necessary.
I hope the same thing doesn’t happen here as happened at Instapundit where I get the annoying “Your browser is out of date ” message and it won’t let me read the site.
I get the long posting times for my comments too, but I just hit the X at the top of my browser, then refresh the page, and there’s my comment.
A “comments” button at the bottom of a post would be great, but my most preferred feature would be e-mailed notices that my comments have received replies. I don’t always remember which posts I’ve commented on, and going back some hours later to see if anyone agrees or disagrees with me (or has ignored me entirely) is something I rarely think to do.
