In Memoriam

I see that John Linebaugh — founder of the “Never Mind The Recoil, See The Dead Elephant Over There” school of large-bore handgun cartridges — has fired off his last round and gone to join JM Browning and Paul Mauser at Vulcan’s knee.

And what better way to commemorate the man than by showing what he was all about, with this Magnum Research monster in .500 Linebaugh?

Just looking at that bad boy BFR makes my wrist ache… but I gotta tell you, unless you’re hunting blue whales or Tiger tanks, you are not going to be undergunned.

R.I.P. John, gone too soon.

  1. it’s a shame he passed away. All of us should be grateful for his work that lead to advancements in cartridge design and helped blaze the way for more handgun hunting.

  2. Clear evidence you *can* have too much of a good thing. Like a top fuel dragster – very effective tool for very narrow circumstances and dangerous in most peoples hands. I’ve seen too many guys with wrist problems and nerve damage from that sort of shooting.

All that said, he was good at what he did and will be missed.

  3. The biggest caliber pistol I have shot is the 454 Casull. I have a buddy that has one. One shot and I handed the pistol back and Nope that is a bit too much. This was back when I could shoot my 44 mag with mag rounds till the barrel got hot with no issues. For the past few years all I have shot out of the 44 is low end 44 Special loads that go down range at 880 fps.
