Not In The Target Market

Longtime Readers will know that I am not averse to wearing a decent watch on my wrist, but there is one type I have to shun altogether:

…and it has nothing to do with the watches’ brands or even style — although I don’t much care for the “chunky” look anyway.

You see, I have hairy arms:

(those aren’t my arms, as my hair is light-brown blonde, but
the thickness is about the same)
.

So metal watch-straps are a form of refined torture, as they snag and pull out the hairs pretty much continuously.

Not that I care, because I prefer the look of a decent leather strap anyway.

And you can forget shaving my arms too… sheesh, imagine going through that every week just to wear a watch…

  1. Same here.
When I wore watches, 30+ years ago, those metal watchbands were a no-no for what you said.

Also, those “stretchy” metal bands are a complete disaster.
Move your hand fast and the weight of the watch causes the band to act like a bungy cord. Very irritating.

A band that can be cinched down and kept in it’s proper place is a requirement, whether that be leather, ballistic nylon, whatever.

But it’s all moot now cause I don’t see a need to know what time it is instantly and prolly never will. There’s a reason they call it a “watch” and it’s an accumulative distraction and “time” waster. Same with calendars. Who needs em?

  2. I wore a Seiko for years with a metal band and I liked it a lot. Unfortunately the pins in the metal band started to loosen up and the watch came off a few times. Since then I went to a Seiko field watch with a Nato strap. I rarely take the watch off now.

Ghost is spot on about those dreadful stretchy metal bands. Those are dreadful and I don’t have hairy gorilla arms.

    1. My buddy sent me a Seiko “shake-to-wind, metal link band” when he was at Clark in ’67. I wore it every single day from then ’til when I retired in ’08; it worked with nary a problem for over 40 years; now I just look at the sun or listen for my wife to call me to dinner.
I don’t have particularly hairy arms, but that band of hair around my left wrist finally gave up, pulled out by the roots; wore it on the inside of my left wrist while drilling/filling so I could check the time without my patients thinking I was more time conscious than “patient care” conscious.

  3. I don’t have hairy arms, and I still didn’t like the feel of the metal band pulling what few hairs I have near my wrist. My watchbands have been leather for years, even though my watches have mainly been cheap ones (except for the Citizen pilot’s watch my spouse gave me, which I wore until it died).

  4. I used to have a nice Timex “Ironman” but the buttons all got solvent-welded so it wasn’t very useful.
Since we have wall clocks all over the place, I see no need to wear a watch either at work or at home. And since everyone carries a cellphone there’s really no need for a watch at all. The only jewelry I wear is my wedding band.

  5. I havent noticed the hair pulling issue myself. At least not enough to bother me.

I never liked the leather bands because they picked up stains from whatever I was working. Plus I like a waterproof watch so I can get it wet. Which is a leather band no-no.

The twist-o-flex stretchy ones were a nightmare.
