lol – math skills! on the left they multiplied 62M times ~45% to get the taxes due but forgot to subtract that amount from 62M to get the cash out value – on the right, they did the math the right way.. mostly..
However, only the government would be able to rig a game of chance so that when you win 62 million, they get to keep almost half! What a world!
More fingers in the pie.
The Texas Lotto is run by one state agency. Mega Millions is spread across 46 states so when they see what is left over to dole out to the “Winner” if they have to buy an annuity for the full amount of the prize the calculation of the Estimated Total is different. It is also possible that the Time frame of the annuity for the full Jackpot is different – 30 years vs. 35 years or whatever the details are. All I know for sure is that ………
The Lottery is a Tax on the people were not paying attention in math class.
And the Taxes for the feds are THEN taken off the top along with what ever the State takes if any so the actual Take Home amount is even smaller if you opt for the one time cash prize option.
Well, as the “National” Mega-Millions has announced that ticket prices will increase from $2.00 to $5.00 in March, (because sales have been flagging, of course) I suspect that the difference is that Lotto Texas Extra tickets sales will spike, and Mega Millions will tank. But then again, I am also an Old Man of Little Brain (TM)*
27mil or 33 mil, what’s the diff?
Either way, I’d be so far gone there would be a big hole in time-space where I used to be.
Can you say, 1000 acres in the montana mountains with me and my ho right slap dab in the middle of it in our million dollar log crib with all the bells and whistles, bristling with every weapon I ever wanted and a 2000 ft shooting range.
I would have a checkbook handy too – if any liberals move within a mile I would pay them double what they paid for their house to get rid of the fuckers.
Does matter what number is printed, whatever you win the Government will take half right off the top if you take the lump sum, then about another half of that half in taxes.
Lump sum and taxes on a large win nets the winner about 25 to 30 percent of original claimed jackpot.
The lottery keeps bragging about 1 billion dollar jackpots, but to get an actual payout of a billion you would have to win 4 billion and take the lump sum or win 2 billion and live long enough for the annuity to pay out.
I would still take the pump sum, but this is all fucking bullshit.

AGREED 100%
I would do the same.
I would have a checkbook handy too – if any liberals move within a mile I would pay them double what they paid for their house to get rid of the fuckers.
Simplified tax math: the government steals half.

ALL TAXATION IS THEFT
Texas is more conservative with the investment return. In either case, you get the actual current amount in the prize pool.
