Way back in the day, the last gubermint shutdown, I had a friend that worked for the treasury department that lost his mind when I openly said tough shit, this is life for most everyone else in the country. Deal with it.

I work in IT and wonder the same thing.
I work for IT in state government. Have for over 6 years. Before that all private companies.
IT is hard work anywhere. Everyone thinks and says it’s so easy. Yet the people that do are dumber than a pile of fucking rocks and can barely spell PC and can’t even log into their email half the time
As bad as IT in the private industry is, the government is far worse. Tons of useless fuckers who “work” from home and do Jack shit. Tons of people who demand 3 monitors, expensive docking stations, wireless keyboards and expensive Apple laptops saying they can’t be productive without this equipment in their job, then the fuckers work from home 3 days a week where they don’t have access to half the equipment the idiots said they needed.
Like you I get paid ok now, not great but ok, but if I could do it over I would go into a trade like electrical or plumbing or hvac.

Protection of government employees from firing is one of the biggest crimes perpetrated on the American people since FDR exploded the size of government. Government employees are routinely over paid, have too many benefits and are far, far too much job security. Cut the compensation packages for every government employee and cut out the deadwood.
