Socially Unacceptable

It’s a good thing I don’t live in New York [list of 20,000 reasons omitted for brevity].  Here’s another one:

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and state Sen. Kevin Palmer’s proposal would allow authorities to review three years of social media history and one year of internet search history of any person seeking to purchase a firearm.

As any fule kno, I don’t have a “social media” presence in the ummm traditional sense.  However, if that “presence” were to include this here blog, I’d probably be disqualified from buying a gun for the next three lifetimes — which is no doubt what these rodents are after anyway.

That said, I will admit that I don’t have too much need for moar guns, e.g.:

Okay, I’ll admit that I don’t have all those guns anymore — just enough to frighten New York politicians.  Fuck them.

    So, at least one?

  2. Having gone thru the pistol permit process in NYC, I can tell you it’s an rectal angina anyway. Mind you, I did so under the Dinkins administration, I doubt it got any better since under Bloomberg and DeBasio.

First you bring the application (in person, not by mail) with a postal money order (not bank, and not a personal check) (I don’t recall the amount, but I’m sure it was over $200) and two passport photos that are less than six months old to One Police Plaza in Manhattan (the only place in the city the permits are processed). Then you wait. And wait. After nine months you’re told you application is approved, you must now go pick up the permit (again in person). Oh, bring two new passport photos, the ones you brought last time are now over six months old. You wait in the waiting room, then sit at a desk while someone asks you the same questions you answered on your application, and basically tries to piss you off (if she succeeds your application is denied). Then you’re given your permit with a permission slip to purchase ONE handgun, said purchase must be completed within 30 days. So you go buy your gun (you’ve had plenty of time to shop), and now you have 72 hours to bring it back to One Police Plaza for “inspection” (aka registration), they also keep your sales receipt, and no they won’t copy it for you. Your permit expires every two years on your birthday, failure to renew (for another $200) will result in nice officers arriving at your home to confiscate your guns to be destroyed.

All this for a target permit, which allows you to transport your gun in a locked container, unloaded and ammo stored separately, from your home to the club you’re required to belong to in order to get the permit. I’ve heard they’ve since discontinued the target permit, you now have a premises permit where you select two DATES per month on which you can take your gun from your home (transported as above) to the range, if you wish to shoot on any other dates you must inform the police beforehand (and they can of course deny permission). Oh, it’s the same dates each month, so if you work and can really only shoot on weekends you’re screwed.

Oh, all that is just for handguns. Rifles and shotguns require a separate permit, and you have to go to Queens for that one.

Yeah, I moved to NJ to escape the gun laws in NYC.

    1. NJ? Seriously? That’s like divorcing your 50 yr. old wife and marrying a 49 yr. old. If you’re going to do it, move to Tennessee or Vermont.

      1. I moved from NYC to NJ because I married a Jersey girl.

A move to Pennsylvania is in the not-too-distant future (as soon after New Year’s as I can manage).
