   in Africa after an even longer time to do something with the resources at hand.

   I’d say there are some cultures to be valued more than others.

2. What is most amazing is that these things were built with ropes and sticks and boards and manual labor, for the most part. We don’t build anything like that now- not because we don’t want to, but because the aesthetic has changed. New Cathedrals look like pole barns with riotous abstract stained glass nonsense. While it is true that the Church is the people, and not the building, the building is an interesting demonstration of the involvement of the congregation.
