Ranked in ascending order of foulness:
- Halfway up the Matterhorn
- The day before you start a new job (i.e. they don’t have to give you maternity leave)
- During your wedding ceremony
- While receiving oral sex (and before having your orgasm)
- A week after the United States has instituted a “single payer” (i.e. NHS) healthcare system.
Your suggestions in Comments. I can’t wait to hear from my Lady Readers.
I can think of two worse times than “A week after the United States has instituted a “single payer” (i.e. NHS) healthcare system:
“A Year after…”
and
“5 years after…”
Sorry Kim, but you’re wrong about the NHS. It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty damn good. And you can pay for better.
The NHS scores highly on things that don’t include “patients surviving their treatment”.
As it happens, I’ve just been through that conversation on a messageboard here: https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=848662
That statistic is highly suspect, as many people in the UK get treatment before the condition is sufficiently advanced as to need surgery so they don’t need surgery. And in the US how many die before they get to surgery because they can’t afford treatment?
And medical error is apparently the third biggest killer in the US: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2016/may/03/cause-of-death-united-states-medical-error
And we can buy additional insurance from BUPA, WPA, et al. Medical bankruptcy is all but unknown in the UK. I understand it’s common in the USA.
