Well now, lookee here:

Colt has reintroduced its legendary Python .357 Magnum revolver in a blued finish.  The reintroduced blued Python comes with either a 4.25″ or 6″ barrel length and holds six rounds of ammunition.

That’s indeed good news.

Sadly, from what I can see in the pic it’s not Colt’s Royal Blue finish, which for me made the original Python the best-looking revolver ever made:

Compare the Python (Royal Blue) with the Officer’s Match below (Standard Blue) and I think you’ll see what I mean.  The difference is what made the Python so beautiful.

Still, I’m not going to complain too much, and at least the new Python is going to sell at the Colt premium price (~$1,400) compared to the old Python’s nosebleed one.

And yes, the new gun’s action isn’t the same either — but I’m told by a gunsmith buddy that while the new action isn’t as smooth, it’s also less complicated and therefore less likely to break (like my old Python’s did).

Time for the obligatory lottery ticket check… damn.

  1. Local range has a new-production Python (6″ stainless steel) on their rental wall. I tried it a few weeks back.

    Now, I’ve never handled, let alone fired, a classic Python, but boy howdy was the trigger on the new-production model smooooooooooth! Better than any Ruger or S&W I’ve tried. And single-action was nice and crisp; just heavy enough to not quite qualify as a “hair trigger” but still plenty light for precision work.

    The sights… eh, I can see why Bill Wilson, Ken Hackathorn, and Mas Ayoob gripe about it (notch is a bit too narrow, and the tolerances are a bit too loose), but regardless I definitely see a new-production Combat Elite (3″ barrel, unfluted cylinder, G10 grips) in my future.

  2. I have an uncle that had the original Python. It went back to the factory for timing issues more than once. I would take a Security Six or my stainless S&W 65 for half the price of a Python.

  3. I just can’t buy the new Python at that price range. Ignore the fact I paid about that much for a used S&W 29-2 with a 4″ barrel last year.

    I’d be just as happy with a S&W 686 with a 4″ or 6″ barrel. I dunno why but the new revolvers being made with a 4-1/4″ barrel annoy me.

    While sweet looking indeed, were I in the market for a wheelie .. I’d drop coin on a Smith 586 .. blue steel / wood grips .. also w/ the 6″ bbl.

  7. I got my sights set on a Ruger Redhawk in .357 with an eight round cylinder. Hoo-boy! I already have an old Python, thought about a new one but decided no. But now with the blueing? I’ll have to see one in person to really decide.
