“It’s a Wonderful Life” fans have expressed outrage that Amazon Prime cut a crucial scene from the beloved Christmas classic.
An abridged version of the 1946 film has been edited to leave out a scene that many consider the most important in the movie, which follows the character of businessman George Bailey as he considers taking his own life.
The scene in question, known as the ‘Pottersville scene,’ sees George wish that he had never been born before his guardian angel reminds him that he needs to earn ‘his angel wings.’
In the original version of the movie, George tells the angel that he believes he is worth more dead than alive. The angel then tells George that he does not know all he has done in his life, before showing him a version of a grim world where he never existed.
That’s when George realizes he has a wonderful life and has positively impacted his loved ones, who he is desperate to get back to as the film comes to a resolution.
But in the abridged version of the film on Prime, the moment where the angel tells George he has to earn his wings abruptly cuts to George happily running through the streets after he’s reconciled with his own life — without including what led him to his newfound acceptance.
…and harking back to the title of this post: this is why I have bought and continue to acquire the DVDs of all my favorite movies (Casablanca, 1984, It Happened One Night, all the Fred/Ginger movies, etc.) and I have a backup multi-format DVD player in case my new one ever breaks.
That way, nobody (e.g. Amazon) can ever take them away from me or “abridge” them. Just who the fucking hell do they think they are? The Pope who had all Michelangelo’s nude works defaced by painting over the women’s pudenda?
Fuck ’em all, and the nanny horse they rode in on.
Bastards.
The censorship is outrageous. I understand warning people with a rating system PG and R ETC so parents can know the general content of a movie however that is not what this is about now.
The media weenies want to not offend anyone.
The first amendment doesn’t exist so one can say hello hope you are having a wonderful day.
It exists so that you can say almost anything (save for “yelling fire in a crowded theatre”)
Slightly related – I like classic rock music. ZZ Top. The Cars. Eddie Money. The other day on the car radio I heard Dire Straights Money for Nothing. Except something was changed.
The song had the word faggot muffled out
With a weird noise, music still played but every time the word faggot came on the word was edited out.
“That little faggot got his own jet airplane
That little faggot, he’s a millionaire”
WTF. It seems that the constitution means shit to these commie fucking bastards.
I’ve heard that they also won’t play Ringo Starr’s version of “you’re sixteen” due to the fact that the love interest is, GASP, underage.
Lots of silly examples out there. I have that Dire Straits song on my spotify rotation, waiting to see how long before they purge it from the list. It still has the faggot lines in question.
About half of all 70s rock was about inappropriate romances.
My Sharona
Too young to date
I really need it, but I’m too young to date
I gotta have it, ’cause I can’t hardly wait
I really need it, but I’m too young to date
Either by Bionic Bunny or D-Day, a new wave band.
Much more explicit than I’ve Got a Brand New Pair of Roller Skates by Melanie who apparently died last January without any notice from the media.
That’s not new. Some stations wouldn’t play “faggot” in the 80s. I think the record companies used to release censored versions of songs, and stations could choose what to play.
(save for “yelling fire in a crowded theatre”)
save for falsely “yelling fire in a crowded theatre”
FTFY!
“The Pope who had all Michelangelo’s nude works defaced by painting over the women’s pudenda?”
Kim please don’t give these commie soul less cock suckers any bad ideas. They have enough of their own fucked up ideas.
Kim, I followed what you are doing with movies. It’s only a matter of time before good movies are censored to resemble a paper snowflake. I put together a collection of films I like, often buying them at second hand stores so I can stretch a buck.
“…I have a backup multi-format DVD player…”
For at least the past 20 years I have been slowly accumulating DVD’s of movies and TV shows I enjoyed the first time around including many of the classics.
Also have 2 DVD players that are multi.
In our living room are 5 DVD players and all of them have DVD’s of classic TV shows on the 50’s and 60’s. I just can’t tolerate most stuff made after about 1990. I’m funny that way, but I lucked out in having a wife that’s the same way – 41 years in Feb.
I’m in my 40’s and agree with this. I don’t have an extensive DVD collection, but I have a good few handfuls of the ones I most enjoy and I have 3 DVD players in the house (one is an old video game system Xbox 360 and it plays DVD’s) and every movie I really enjoy I buy on DVD. (Die Hard 1 and 2, the Lethal Weapon Series, Airplane 1 and 2, Batman with Michael Keaton, Caddyshack, you get the idea. I’m an 80’s born baby, but I agree with you, most new entertainment stuff is pure shit. (The Rich Housewives TV show – how the fuck can anyone find that entertaining? bunch of ugly rich liberal cunts many of whom have had way too much plastic surgery and act worse than teenage women). I can’t even stand the Modern Superman and Batman movies. Christopher Reeve will always be Superman to me and Michael Keaton will always be Batman. (Though I will say that Gal Gadot is a damn good and smoking hot Wondering Woman)
Overall I can’t find the attention span to watch many modern movies, only a few here and there, but I can go back and watch older movies over and over 100 times and still enjoy them as much as I did the first time I watched them.
I do have those Amazon Firestick devices and will stream movies and shows, but it is nice to have the DVD physical copy in case of
– commie censorship
– internet outage where you can’t stream
– removal of a movie from streaming platforms
– changes to movie content for any reason.
And of course – you own something! A physical copy of something is way better than a streaming or tv broadcast
I haven’t played any modern video games since Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii. You can still buy some physical copies of games these days but many are download only. Or you buy what you think is a physical copy and it actually has a paper with a download code inside.
Look at prices of some classic video games. People want them and they are collectible. Especially Nintendo stuff. The older systems like NES, SNES and N64, Wii , some of the popular games are very pricey now.
But streaming and TV broadcast is the new fangled thing and the government loves it and the media scumbags love it because it’s easy to censor or remove content that doesn’t fit the current narrative.
I need to get a DVD copy of Eyes Wide Shut. I don’t think Tom Cruise is a great actor he’s ok but that movie is a Stanley Kubrick masterpiece. His final movie. I fear that film will become censored at some point. I think that movie shows some of the activity that some / many elites of the world engage in.
Pick up physical copies of the movies you like before they disappear.
Bu-but if we don’t censor out the notions of crime and retribution, how will the Progressives get back into office?
.
“ how will the Progressives get back into office?”
– Election Fraud (2020 most recent example, 81 million votes for Biden???)
– Buying votes with stolen tax money aka wealth redistribution example “canceling” student debt.
– Flooding the country with illegals and giving them stolen taxpayer funds for free shit and then when they become citizens they vote for the hand that feeds them. (If they even wait to become citizens to vote).
– Indoctrinating the 5 to 22 year olds through our commie education system. Most schools and colleges are run by mentally defective liberal cock suckers who brain wash young minds to believe that liberals are great and conservatives are evil.
On top of that – all it takes is a little swaying of swing state voters. Ya know like someone who is not for either party, worked his whole life and is 60 to 65 now, or a 40 to 55 year old who is trying to get to retirement, they see the economy run into the ground by the liberals and RINO’s and then they get slick talked by someone like Clinton, Biden, Obama etc into believing that they can cure society’s ills. You just have to give up your rights (guns, free speech) and more of your tax money and the Govt will make all well for you.
Back before cable, when I was a lad, almost every movie I saw was edited, as in “This film has been modified from its original version. It has been formatted to fit this screen and edited to run in the time allotted and for content.” No telling how much I missed from the original production, mostly just a few exposed boobies and some silly voice-over of the dirty words.
Cindy Morgan, Caddyshack
Pick that up on DVD as I’m betting the famous scene with her and Michael O’Keefe won’t be shown on Broadcast TV.
The full length movie was available on Amazon Prime if you paid to see it.
Since this post is about cutting scenes in a movie ( AKA censorship ) try to find a copy of 2001 the space odissey where the part which show the primitive man throw is bone in the air and you see it slowly become a space ship is still complete, instead what you have now is a cut that avoid this transfomation and the whole scene become mostly meanigless. I would bet that the cut is a least 20 years old.
I think the comedian who juxtaposed the lyrics of “Baby it’s cold outside” with WAP (a number one song of the same year Baby was canceled) hit the nail on the head.
Anything old that contains content that are deemed problematic by CS Lewis’ “perpetual moral busybodies” today must be censored while the celebration of the vulgar, blasphemous, or ugly that is popular music, art, and motion pictures must be held up as the pinnacle of human expression.
I buy books on Amazon. If they’re good, I buy the dead tree version. If they’re important, I buy the dead tree version and store it somewhere safe.
